Trauma is subjective and based on the person's internal experience. It can exhibit physical traits like bodily injury or muscle tension. It also has psychological or emotional symptoms, for example, shock, feeling numb, and fear. 

In addition, somatization may occur. This is where you have bodily symptoms or dysfunctions because of emotional distress. Many people may feel fatigue, have digestion problems, or have constant headaches that have no correlation with a physical illness.  

How an event affects an individual depends on many factors, including characteristics of the individual, the type and characteristics of the event(s), developmental processes, the meaning of the trauma, and sociocultural factors. 

The Biology of Trauma

Current research shows that exposure to trauma leads to certain biological changes and stress responses. These changes are highly associated with PTSD, other mental illnesses, and substance use disorders. These biological changes include: 

  • The limbic system, which helps process emotions, fear, and memory, may become overactive or dysregulated.
  • The stress-response system, known as the HPA axis, may also become unbalanced. This can lead to unusual or changing cortisol levels, which affect sleep, mood, energy, and the body’s ability to calm down after stress.
  • PTSD may also affect brain chemicals involved in alertness, pain relief, and emotional regulation. This can leave you feeling constantly on edge, emotionally overwhelmed, numb, or physically tense.

Under normal circumstances, these structures work in coordinated concert: the amygdala flags potential threats, the hippocampus provides contextual memory to evaluate them, and the prefrontal cortex (PFC) applies rational judgment to regulate the response.

Trauma breaks this coordination. The amygdala is no longer properly regulated by the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, and it now fires too intensely in response to cues that would not alarm most people. As a result, nonthreatening triggers become threats.

Music and sound interventions have the potential to help people suffering from PTSD by decreasing amygdala activity and improving hippocampal and prefrontal brain function.

Music and sound trigger the release of neurotransmitters, including dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin, while modulating activity in the amygdala and the brain's mesolimbic reward system. It can also shift the autonomic nervous system toward parasympathetic dominance, the rest-and-digest state associated with relaxation, lowered heart rate, and reduced stress hormones.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is the body's primary hormonal stress-response system.

The HPA axis involves a complex set of interactions among the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal gland that determines the level of circulating cortisol. 

In a healthy system, cortisol is the body's essential stress-management molecule. It mobilizes energy, sharpens focus, and enables a rapid and appropriate response to threats. But in PTSD, the HPA axis is chronically dysregulated. 

The result is a cortisol pattern that is simultaneously dysregulated and unpredictable: too high at some points, too low at others, and always out of sync with the body's actual needs. It causes disruption in sleep cycles, immune function, energy regulation, mood stability, and the body's capacity to return to calm after stress. 

Vibroacoustic therapy directly targets this dysregulated axis through the autonomic nervous system.
